When you attempt to access a PowerPoint document and get an error notice stating that the file is corrupted and cannot be opened/saved, you can be confident that the file you’re trying to open or alter is corrupted.

An error notice stating that “this is not a PowerPoint presentation,” that the PowerPoint application cannot open the file type, or that a portion of the file is missing are all symptoms of a corrupted presentation.

Other forms of error messages include invalid page fault, low system resources, general protection fault, and unlawful instruction, among others.

To test whether the presentation is genuinely broken or corrupted, open it on an another machine and observe if the strange behavior occurs there as well.

You may also try creating a fresh PowerPoint file to check if the problem remains.

If you are unable to open or save a freshly prepared presentation, check for and install any updates in Office, then attempt the options given below to remedy the issue.

How can I repair a damaged PowerPoint file that won’t open or save?

1. Switch to a different presenting program (recommended)

If you utilize PowerPoint to its maximum extent, it can be a very strong and successful tool, but if you’ve arrived at this page, it implies your presentation has been damaged and is no longer working.

Instead of going through the process all over again, consider using a professional presentation tool that was built from the bottom up to display information in a visually appealing way.

Do you wish to leave a lasting impression on your Instagram followers with a cool post? What about the social media site Facebook? You can make sophisticated presentations, web pages, animated films, and much more with only a few clicks using these types of technologies.

Despite the fact that every presentation software functions in the same manner, their target audiences differ. Some applications will aid bloggers and small companies, while others will benefit designers and entrepreneurs.

In such circumstances, feature releases will be based on the demands of the target audience, including, for example, price and sharing possibilities. A PowerPoint alternative may be the ideal solution if you need to accomplish your assignment quickly.

If you think troubleshooting can assist you, go to the following steps.

2. Restart the computer completely.

  2. Click Start, then type the following code into the search box and hit Enter: msconfig.exe

5. Paste the slides from the damaged presentation into a new presentation.

  1. Make a presentation that is completely blank. 1642769996_436_PowerPoint-file-is-corrupted-and-cannot-be-openedsaved
  2. By going to the Home tab and selecting the arrow next to New slides in the Slides group, you may turn the damaged presentation into slides.
  3. Select Reuse Slides from the drop-down menu. 1642769997_527_PowerPoint-file-is-corrupted-and-cannot-be-openedsaved

  5. Select the messed-up presentation.
  6. Click the Open button.
  7. In the Reuse Slides task pane, right-click one of the slides.
  8. To insert all of the slides from the damaged presentation, excluding the slide master, into the new presentation, click Insert All.
  9. Save the file (with a new name for the presentation).
  10. Click Save after giving the presentation a new name.

If the damaged presentation does not seem as you planned, you may use it as a template by doing the following:

  1. Select File from the File menu.
  2. Save the file to your computer.
  3. To make a backup copy of the restored presentation, provide a new name for it and then click Save.
  4. In the Themes group of the Design tab, select More.
  5. Select Browse for Themes from the drop-down menu.
  6. Then, on the damaged presentation, click Apply. The damaged presentation’s slide master will be used to replace the new slide master.

If you notice any strange behavior after this, it’s possible that the template has harmed the display. In this situation, re-create the master slide from the backup copy.

Continue to the next solution if the backup copy of the new presentation is still damaged like the original.

6. Open the presentation’s temporary file version.

1642769998_815_PowerPoint-file-is-corrupted-and-cannot-be-openedsaved

  1. Try renaming the file and then opening it in PowerPoint.
  2. Select Rename from the context menu by right-clicking.
  3. Change the old.tmp file extension to.pptx so that the filename looks like this: PPT ####.pptx.
  4. To open a file in PowerPoint, go to the Filemenu and choose Open.
  5. Navigate to the renamed file’s folder.
  6. Open the file in PowerPoint and see what happens.

PowerPoint produces a temporary duplicate of the file called PPT ####.tmp when you change a presentation.

Where #### is a four-digit number generated at random, and this temporary file may be found in the same folder as the presentation, or in the temporary file folder.

Note: There might be several files that match to the temporary file produced the previous time you saved the presentation, so examine each one to determine whether it’s the temporary copy of the presentation.

Try the following solution if there is no such document or if you see the same PowerPoint file that still won’t open.

7. Use PowerPoint Viewer to access the presentation.

  1. Open Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge if you haven’t already.
  2. Visit the Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 Viewer webpage.
  3. By clicking Download and then Run, you may install PowerPoint Viewer.
  4. Click Download.
  5. Click Run.
  6. Then click Continue after selecting the Check here to accept the Microsoft Software License Terms option.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click Start, All Apps, and then Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer (2007/2010) to open the corrupted presentation in PowerPoint Viewer.
  9. Accept the offer.
  10. Open the damaged presentation by right-clicking it and selecting Open.

If it opens in PowerPoint Viewer, your copy of PowerPoint 2013 or 2016 on your computer could be destroyed. If you can’t open it, copy it and paste it somewhere else.

It is damaged or exists in a damaged section of the hard drive if it cannot be replicated. Open the copy in PowerPoint 2013 or 2016 if you can copy it.

8. On the hard disk drive, run Scandisk.

  1. Open the File Explorer program.
  2. Select the hard disk drive with the damaged appearance from the context menu.
  3. Click Properties
  4. Select Tools from the drop-down menu.
  5. Click Check Now in the Error-checking section.
  6. Check the option that says “Automatically correct file system issues.”
  7. Check the box for Scan for and try recovery of faulty sectors.
  8. Click Start.

Scandisk may check for cross-linking and restore the presentation, but this does not ensure that PowerPoint 2013 or 2016 will read it.

9. Under Protected View, uncheck all options.

  1. To begin, open PowerPoint.
  2. Select File, then Options from the drop-down menu.
  3. Select Trust Center, then Trust Center Settings from the drop-down menu.
  4. Select the Protected view option.
  5. Uncheck all the options under Protected View and Click the OK button. 1642769998_929_PowerPoint-file-is-corrupted-and-cannot-be-openedsaved
  6. Try to open the presentation again after restarting PowerPoint.

10. Make a Rich Text Format (RTF) file of the presentation.

  1. To begin, open the presentation.
  2. Click Save As from the File menu.
  3. Other Formats should be selected.
  4. Click Outline/RTF(*.rtf) in the Save File As Type dropdown.
  5. Type the name you wish to use in the File Name box. 1642769999_788_PowerPoint-file-is-corrupted-and-cannot-be-openedsaved
  6. Select a place for the presentation to be saved, and then click Save.
  7. Finish your presentation.

The original presentation’s visuals, tables, and other content will not be preserved in the.rtf file.

Open the .rtf file by clicking File then Open then access Files of type list then All Outlines or All Files then click the RTF file saved and Click the Open button. This will recreate the presentation based on the original outline view.

11. Reset component security settings to their default values manually.

  1. Click Start, then put dcomcnfgin into the search box.
  2. In the Programs menu, choose dcomcnfg.
  3. Expand Component Services in the navigation pane.
  4. Expand Computers.
  5. Right-click My Computer and choose Properties from the drop-down menu. 1642769999_930_PowerPoint-file-is-corrupted-and-cannot-be-openedsaved
  6. Open the Default Properties tab and change the settings to: Connect is the default authentication level, whereas Identify is the default impersonation level.
  7. Click OK.

12. Make use of the Open and Repair commands.

  1. Then choose File, then Open.
  2. Navigate to the presentation’s storage location or folder.
  3. Click Open.
  4. Click the desired file, then the arrow next to Open, and select Open and Repair. 1642770000_692_PowerPoint-file-is-corrupted-and-cannot-be-openedsaved
